TUBERCULOSIS IN PREGNANCY: FORMER AND NOW Valdone Miseviciene, Dane Slapkauskaite Šiauliai University Department of Medicine, Šiauliai, Lithuania
As the incidence of tuberculosis has increased worldwide, especially among persons 25 to 44 years of age and many of them are women, it is expected that pregnant women will acquire this infection more frequently. Tuberculosis during the pregnancy may represent a risk for maternal and neonatal complications, thats why it is important for the clinician to be aware of the impact of tuberculosis on this population. The article presents the literature review about evolution of understanding this problem during XIXXX centuries, as well as the effects of tuberculosis on pregnancy and foetus, effects of pregnancy on the course of maternal tuberculosis. It is discussed current view on former separation of child and mother with active tuberculosis, breastfeeding, as well as main principles of the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of tuberculosis in pregnancy.
